Book Browsing Monday: Poetry Books

Hello Starlight Readers! It's time for Book Browsing Monday! Last week, I looked at a variety of novels that interested me. Today, and likely every other BBM following today, I'm going to keep it to a specific theme. Let's get to it!

YA NOVELS TOLD IN VERSE

Many of you might be familiar with the works of Ellen Hopkins, who has written novels such as Crank, Impulse, and Tricks, all of which tackle difficult themes. Because I just received a copy of her novel Perfect, I figured that I should for other novels told in verse and share them! 

1. Glimpse by Carol Lynch Williams

Synopsis: Twelve year old girl Hope's life is turned upside down when her older sister Lizzie becomes an elective mute and is institutionalized after trying to kill herself.

With raw and haunting writing reminiscent of Ellen Hopkins and Elizabeth Scott, Carol Lynch Williams is a promising new YA voice.

2. Fault by Amy Ellis

Synopsis: Liz is a regular teenager with a best friend who can get her into the best parties which is great until Liz gets roofied and raped one night at a party and when she starts to speak up, things get messy. When no one, including her best friend, believes her story, she finds herself absolutely alone and the target of bullies, threatening her to “stop lying.” Just as Liz is giving used to getting milk poured down her shirt and being called the school slut, mysterious letters begin appearing in her locker and Liz learns that there is more power in number s and words than she ever imagined. Told in haunting verse, Fault is a story of power and taking back control when all seems completely lost.

3. I Heart You, You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder

4. Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

Synopsis: A novel in verse. Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. 6. Love and Leftovers by Sarah Tregay

Currently Reading: Jekel Loves Hyde

Hello Starlight-Readers! It's Sunday, and that means that I get to catch you up on what I've been reading. Recently. I just finished the book from last Sunday, My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick, so expect a review up on Wednesday! Now, here's what I just started:

My Thoughts:

I've heard mixed reviews about this book, mainly because people compare it to Beth Fantasy's other novel, Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, which I have not read. I'm willing to push all that aside and form my own opinions about the novel! I love the cover, and the fact that it involves the story of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! I've really only read the first page, but I'm excited to read the rest! Expect a review soon!

Synopsis:

False Idols by Alexis Grove is a novel that originated on Wattpad before being published. I’m usually a bit weary of reading Wattpad novels, as many of them are written by young teens who have yet to perfect their writing skills, but sometimes their are hidden gems just waiting to be plucked up by a publisher. False Idols is one such novel. 
I found myself flipping pages all night (digitally, of course, as I read it on my Kindle) desperate to find out what event would next befall our heros. There’s plenty of action, both physical and digital, as the characters deal with the two worlds they must traverse. In addition to the action and scifi elements, there’s also a bit of romance, religion, economics, and politics thrown into the blend, which helps to create a more realistic story. Every action has consequences, and Grove managed to explore the different facets of the topics without getting too preachy or condescending. The characters are easy to fall in love with, even the villains, some of whom are more anti-heroes in my eyes. I can’t wait to find out what happens to them next!
Fans of the science fiction genre will love this, as well as people who’d love a bit of drama-tinged action in a novel. You’ll find yourself flipping pages until the end, and then you’ll be longing for the sequel, which is available on amazon HERE. I know that I’ll be reading it soon, and I highly encourage you to read False Idols, and then the second book. 

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Resolutions For 2016

Hello Starlight-Readers! Today's Top Ten Resolutions prompt, courtesy of The Broke and the Bookish!

1. Establish a Regular Posting Schedule on my Blogs!!!
• As I said in yesterday's post, I really want to get my blogs organized and consistent. No more of the random posts whenever I feel like it! I'm going to rework the tagging system and stick to the posting schedule that I posted yesterday.
2. Finish the Mortal Instruments Series!!!
• So, with the series being adapted into the tv show, Shadowhunters, and more and more of my friends reading the series, I guess that I'd better finally get around to finishing it. I have the first three books, but I've only read City of Bones and City of Ashes. I suppose that I should finally move the remaining books to the top of my TBR pile!
3. Create my own Book Photo Challenge!!!
• For the longest time, I've been madly in love with pictures of books and bookshelves.On Tumblr, I've seen so many book photo challenges, which are essentially photo prompts for the whole month. I've participated in a few of them, and now I want to make my own! I definitely plan on starting on up in 2016!
4. Host a Read-Along!!!
• I'm very excited to host my own read along this year! I'm still deciding on a book, but I have ideas! I want to get as many people involved as I can and just have a great time with it! I'll definitely keep you posted with more details once I figure it all out!
5. Connect with more authors and publishers!!!
• Without the wonderful authors and publishers in the world, my blog wouldn't even exist! As a sort of thanks, I'd like to connect with the people of the various facets of the publishing industry. (It'll also be helpful when I go to look for an internship... *wink wink*) Connections are important!
6. Establish my Social Media Sites!!!
• Yeah... so my twitter and Facebook pages are pretty non-existant at the moment, but I plan to change that! I'm learning more about scheduling posts and management tools that can help me to keep those sites fresh and fun all year long!
7. Read more books!!!
• I'm pretty sure that this one is on every bibliophile's resolution list, but I want to read more books! There are so many new titles coming out that I'm super excited for, including Rick Yancey's The Last Star, which I am anxiously awaiting. I know that I won't be able to read every book ever written in my lifetime, but I can tackle as many as I can!
8. Host a Giveaway!!!
• I think I've been saying this since I hit 100 followers on Tumblr a few months ago, but I really want to host a giveaway. I had to figure some things out, but now I'm definitely ready to host one. I already have my prizes figured out, so now it's just a matter of me posting it and choosing a winner later. I'll keep you posted with details!
9. Develop more an online presence!!!
• This one is kind of tied in with resolution #6. I want you guys to get to know who I am, and I want to learn more about you! This is a brand new year, and I want you guys to get to meet the girl behind Starlight-Reads!!!
10. Go to college!!!
• Okay... so this last one isn't book related, but no one ever said that it had to be! My last resolution for 2016 is kind of a given, but it's something that I wanted to mention. I'm a senior in high school right now, balancing blogging, a heavy load of schoolwork, and a decent social life. One might think that after all of the work that I've been doing these past few years that I might want to take a gap year, but nope! Not me! I'm so excited to attend my dream school, which I was recently accepted into. Part of my intended minor requires a publishing internship! So yes, I'm super excited. This isn't as much of a resolution as it is a thing that I'm automatically going to do, but it was worth mentioning!

The Ruby Iyer Diaries by Laxmi Hariharan

Review:

I actually just finished reading this novella, so I'm going to write my review while it's still fresh on my mind. 

Pretty much what we have here are random, fast paced diary entries of the protagonist of "The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer." It's a fast read, mainly meant to characterize Ruby. There isn't really a plot, considering that these are just random diary entries. From the fragments that we get to read, you can sort of begin to piece together the type of person that Ruby is. I must say that the author did a good job of characterizing Ruby in what we see of her. She's an angry, somewhat selfish, and majorly determined girl. Getting to see her in a variety of situations throughout her adolescence is definitely entertaining.

My problem with the novel was that it didn't exactly read like a diary. It was written in present tense, which definitely didn't suggest that these were written by a young girl at the end of each day. Also, there are occasional references of future events, which would not be known at the time of writing the entry. Also, for the edition that I read to be the finished version available for download on Amazon, there were some issues. I found everything from grammatical issues to outright inconsistencies (notably in one of the 14-year-old chapters, in which she references herself as 13.) These errors kept me from fully enjoying the novel. 

While I'm not entirely sold on the full novel (I don't even exactly know what it'll be about!) I think I'll give it a try. The other novella in this series seems quite interesting, so I know that I'll give it a try. To be honest, I'd recommend this novella to people who have already read The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer, as it might provide more context into Ruby's past.
